Hi all, clarity needed on lenses

I now have the 6d mk2, with 2 EF lenses.
A friend has just given me his tokina f2.8 wideangle lens, which is an EFS lens.

My camera has the white square on it, the lens has the red dot and on the side the white square.

Can I use this without damaging my mirror, canon website sort of says if it red dot or white square it can be fitted to the camera body if it has either red or white.

I don't think you can use EF-S Lenses on a Full frame camera. I don't think you can even mount it.

Hi all, disagree I think. From Canon UK website it states
"If you see a red circle on the lens mount your camera will accept EF lenses.
If you see a red circle and a white square it will accept EF-S lenses as well."

I have mounted the lens, it fits and fires, but just read on line that some cameras and lenses, the lenses can damage the mirror.

Its a canon 6dmk2 and a tokina EFS lens.

The guy I got it from stated he used it successfully on a canon 5d (not sure of the mark), but these are all full frame.

I do accept that at very wide settings it had vignetting.

EF-S lenses can be mounted on an EF mount. However, the -S denotes that it is only designed to cover an APS-C sensor, and will produce a vignetted image if placed on full frame. I don't know that there is any potential mirror damage, as the EF and EF-S mounts are the same, but it will not provide full sensor coverage.

Actually not all EF cameras can take an EF-S lens. My 5D MKIII cannot mount an EF-S. The reason is the mirror would hit the back of the lens as it protrudes further into the camera to cover a smaller AP-C sized sensor. The mounts look similar but are not the same.

You're right, mea culpa. It appears that at least some EF cameras have an indent that don't allow -S lenses to be mounted.
