Best Softboxes For Video/Green Screen?
on Sep 28, 2013 at 6:43:00 pm

I would like to purchase some softboxes to use as lighting for my green screen.

I am using halogen work lights on my green screen and need lights for subject lighting.

I used some cheap umbrellas off of Amazon and they were not bright enough for subject light, so I think I need softboxes but am unsure how to pick ones out.

I am willing to spend up to $200 to get what I need.

Does anybody have experienced with subject lighting for green screen video? (I'm using a T4i). Please share if you do. I'm under the impression that umbrellas are just not the way to go for video.

I did some greenscreen work

using umbrellas with some varied results:

I used a Canon T2i with Magic lantern installed so I could shoot at 320ISO. I used a combination of 45W and 85W CFLs inside the umbrellas. I think it would have been better with more wattage in softboxes. Note, also, you light the greenscreen separate from the model - there is some light spill from the green screen lighting that actually made keying the footage easier, but it wasn't necessarily desirable.

$200 isn't much for lighting. Sorry. I could do DIY lighting in that price range, but you will need to make your own equipment. The CFL bulbs alone can run $200. Some places to check: - lots of mid-priced stuff. - they make the big CFL bulbs I like. - more low- to mid-priced stuff. I've had varying quality issues with them, but when you're on a budget, they rock.

Save early. Save often.
