Wireless Lavelier Microphone Recommendations

In descending order of price and audio quality, based on my personal experience.

Audio Ltd. 2020 or 2040

Anything by Lectrosonics or Zaxcom.

Sennheiser

Audio Technica

Sony and Shure both make a variety of systems, but I have no direct experience with them.

Original Post says: "I need to buy two nice wireless lavelier microphones."

Since a wireless lavalier is useless without a receiver, I think it's safe to say that Ty's recommendation of wireless systems is appropriate.

If the OP does a search on the forum, he will find that the many, many times this has been discussed before, the answer is always - you get what you pay for. The Sennheiser G3 (or G2 units used) are the lowest cost system that's worth looking at. The Audio-Technica systems in roughly the same price ballpark also get good marks. Lectrosonics is a big step up in price, but in sound quality and durability as well. Anything less than the Sennheisers are not going to cut it for professional sound. Note: The Sennheiser G3 Lavalier systems (with transmitter and receiver) will run about $600 each.

Also I would like to go XLR into my camera. I can't do that without an adaptor for the receiver. Correct?

A mini 1/8" to XLR does come with the receiver.

two things:

I leave mine plugged in because the transmitter and receiver look so much alike that having the receiver with male XLR identifies it immediately.

the cable isn't super heavy duty so it may fail. Eric Toline who frequents this forum makes replacement cables and also resolders the antennas when they get pulled off.

Remember that in North America, anything in the 700 MHz band is now illegal:

"The operation of wireless microphones and similar devices is prohibited from certain frequency bands for public safety reasons and commercial concerns. The sale of wireless microphones or similar devices intended for use in the United States in the 700 MHz Band was banned by the FCC in January 2010, and use of the devices in the 700 MHz Band was prohibited as of June 12, 2010. “Similar devices” include wireless intercoms, ear monitors, audio instrument links and cueing equipment.

The 700 MHz Band – between 698 and 806 MHz -- is now reserved for use only by public safety groups, such as police, fire and emergency services, and commercial providers of wireless broadband services. Use on broadcast bands outside of the 700 MHz Band was not affected by the ban, and can continue..."
