raising the vices while lowering background noise
on May 15, 2017 at 11:31:16 am

Hi guys, I have a question:

I have a clip on my timeline. There are two people having a conversation but there is also a conversation at a lower level in the background at times. How would members here go about boosting the main conversation whilst lowering or removing the background conversation? It is very distracting and ruins the scene.

Keith

I would experiment with capturing a noise print in Audition and using the noise reduction process, then see if I could manually clean up a little bit more from that manually. With background dialog, this may not work, depending on the clip, though.

My second trip around I would try simply keyframing gaps in the primary dialog to reduce the presence of the background.

Without hearing the clips, these are only guesses as to how to approach it. The more presence the background dialog has, the more of a challenge this will be.

I am sure others will chime in with some great (and better) ideas as well.

System:
Dell Precision T7600 (x2)
Win 7 64-bit
32GB RAM
Adobe CC 2015.02 (as of 6/2016)
256GB SSD system drive
4 internal media drives RAID 5
Typically cutting short form from HD MP4 and P2 MXF.

I agree. You can also try other methods like noise gate(if crowd is quieter) or even izotrope rx6 with its new advanced voice separator.
as with all audio effects, start them with minimum settings in multiple passes. once you hear distortion, just undo the last apply.

You dont say what your micing was.
If the main dialogue you want is on 1 track and the other annoying dialogue is on the other, then its an easy fix on the faders.
If its all mixed then you are in big trouble, and whoever made the recording needs to explain their actions.
Izotope is a great tool but I dont think its going to help you , let alone are you going to want to buy it!
