And, remember, I'm an amateur, I make stupid comedy videos with a lot of green screen, some effects, I'm not working on the final version of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Shmucks, I don't have a team I have to keep up with. Those of you who remember my nightmares with the z800, just give me your opinions of the components listed and if, together, they would provide a pleasant experience. Thanks

A mediocre 4.2 GHZ Kaby Lake CPU with 16 GB of RAM and a GTX 1080 would probably work just fine for your needs. Having said that wait until the Zen CPUs form AMD hit the market next month. The Zen CPUs may or may not be a game changer for video editors.

Well, you ARE working in 4K, right?

And I doubt you shoot in 4K ProRes 422, it's probably some kind of AVCHD, which is computationally intensive to play back.

If it wasn't for that fancy-schmancy camera of yours, you'd probably be okay with that new box. And fast drives. And a pretty good video card.

I wouldn't put my money on almost 10 year old processors unless that package would be really cheap.

How does $720.00, shipping included sound?

And, Dave, I'm surprised a "pro" like you thinks a GH4 is fancy-shmancy.

[Duke Sweden] "How does $720.00, shipping included sound?"

Not that bad. That said a "basic" modern i5 or i7 CPU will still probably be faster in your use unless you're is doing a lot of parallel computing (like exporting multiple versions from one file at the same time).

You could probably get a new ready to go Asus/Acer/whatever desktop computer with that money.

Hey, it's 4K.

We poor promo guys don't get nice cameras. The news & commercial production departments get 'em. Sure, we can borrow -- if available -- but not buy. No budget for it, y'know.

Well, if it makes you feel better, the only reason I could afford this is because my wife died and had a small life insurance policy. Happy now?

Thanks Ann but they don't know me there and will assume I'm some video editing big shot like Dave LaRonde 😉

Anyway, I've given up BUT... I found this one with specs that blows away anything I've ever seen before (in my world, of course, not you guys). Some places mistakenly say DDR3 but RAM is definitely DDR4. All for under $1,000.00

So I'm giving it one last shot. If you guys can pick apart THESE specs then there's no hope for me. So have at it.....NOW!!!

well, its not 10 years old this time...but its still 4 cores and a generation older than 7700k, and Premiere likes 6 or more cores for 4k.

https://www.pugetsystems.com/labs/articles/Premiere-Pro-2017-Intel-Core-i7-...
https://www.pugetsystems.com/labs/articles/Adobe-Premiere-Pro-CC-2015-3-CPU...

also, you would need at the minimum, a 850 evo for os/apps/render output/media cache/
and another 850pro or 960 evo for media/project files

minimum 1060gtx or 1050ti. 32gb ram.

I mean, you could get what you need and have good results without having to cut corners for the same price. you just need a vendor that won't rip you off.

But I listed a 1TB Samsung EVO 850 in the specs (along with a 10TB HD. A GTX 1060 is better than a GTX 1080, which this comes with?

I never thought THESE specs could be knocked, so now I officially give up, unless you just skimmed over all those specs and didn't notice those. Do you stand by your opinion?

no, aw, i guess you missed my point.
in your specs, there's only one ssd. and sure, the 1080 is faster than a 1070 but in most renders, they are the same speed but the 1080 is much more expensive. i.e. waste of money. premiere is much more cpu bound anyway. i.e. it needs 6 cores or more 6800k.

2 TB hd's are fine for backup and storage, not for render output or media/project files etc. They would negate the point of having a fast cpu.

I'm say'in you could find a good vendor and get what I listed above for around $1,000 and never have to return stuff again. you could even buy the parts and build it yourself. It's pretty easy now, like building legos.

You don't require a 6 or 8 core processor to do 4K. I've done a lot of 4K stuff with a i7 4 core CPU that has hyperthreading. Of course it would be neat to have more but that looks like a good home project computer to me.

Thanks, Tero. I'm gonna sleep on it, at least until the seller is down to his last one ;-)
