Hi guys

Standard precursor to any post on here, I appreciate the info you guys give on these forums. Always massively useful ☺

I have attached a picture with all my system details on it

So I recently invested about a grand in a new system which I had built from one of those companies online (http://www.cyberpowersystem.co.uk), I have had it for about 6 month and have generally been happy with it, but since 4k footage and larger projects in general have come into play I really haven't been able to work at the speed I would like to. I think I have a good idea of where to start but I am not entirely sure. I believe you are meant to store your media on a drive other then your C: drive which I have done, but my C Drive is a hybrid and my media drive is a standard hard disk. I also use AE quite allot so was considering upgrading my graphics card but wasnt sure if that was a limiting factor or if RAM was more of an issue...

Problems
-Premiere crashing
-slow to playback big projects
-slow to playback 4k footage
-slow to view 120fps footage (not in NLE)
-AE compositing not as fast as I would like

I have heard good and bad things about RAID and would consider it but would I just be better off getting another hard drive or an SSD? My budget is probably around 300 as I have other kit to buy and need to upgrade my monitor at some point.

Side points:
- I have a suspicion there is something wrong with my graphics card because sometimes videos would go green online or look datamosh-ey (weird compression looking morphing).
-I am also unsure as to why using proxy media hasn't really fixed this, I have converted 2 4k 5 minute clips to 720 cineform which should surely be easy for my system to handle but still get v bad playback skipping even when proxies are turned on

Hi Josh,

Not much useful information in the system dump, other than Processor and RAM and OS.

So which graphics card do you currently have? That would be helpful to know.

As for storage, what are the specs of the second drive? A SATA drive like a WD Black, or Seagate Barracuda is a minimum for video editing (7200rpm, 64mb cache), and also depends on what kind of footage you edit. Is it AVCHD at 25mbps, or ProRes at 200mbps? Or 4K RAW at ??

You might just consider external storage meant for video editing. Such as a desktop RAID with 2 drives in it and USB 3.0 or USB-C connection (the latter is faster if the new PC supports it).

For graphics, consider a GTX 1060 as a good minimum card for Adobe

Thanks

Jeff has some solid advice there.

You never want your media on the same drive as your OS and apps. That is a no-no.

Biggest bang I got for the least money is getting an SSD (not a hybrid) for the OS and apps. Makes a big difference for me in day-to-day use.

And for Premiere Pro, the right graphics card is important. If you are using a motherboard video chipset, that may be an issue.

System:
Dell Precision T7600 (x2)
Win 7 64-bit
32GB RAM
Adobe CC 2015.02 (as of 6/2016)
256GB SSD system drive
4 internal media drives RAID 5
Typically cutting short form from HD MP4 and P2 MXF.
