4k file playback Premiere & Windows
on Dec 17, 2016 at 2:16:10 pm

I have a Asus laptop running spec -
Intel i7 2.4Ghz, 16GB RAM, graphics - NVIDIA geforce GTX970m

I have a desktop PC spec -
AMD FX 4170 QUAD CORE 4.2GHZ processor - 32 GB RAM - geforce nvidia GTX 770

I cannot play or edit 4K files on either , the footage sticks ,
I have researched so much , played around with the VLC player and NVIDIA control panel , - I've ticked the GPU acceleration in the control panel etc...

The laptop I am espiecially surprised in the laptop not playing back as 4k playback is marketed as one of its benefits the desktop I could imagine that I would have to upgrade the processor to watch - but I thought at least I could get up and running with this setup -
The CPU is 98% maxed out when I try to play back ,

Can anyone advise me what I am doing wrong , with regards to Premiere should I download a new codec

What is best to shoot for easier playback - PRORES or DNX format?

So yes after alot of research I am really struggling for a solution ..

if you have 4k, you would need a brand new 6 core new i-7 @4.2GHZ
The easiest transcode/preview codec on your cpu is cineform. if that doesn't work, your cpu just can't handle online editing.

You can still use the offline proxy mode in premiere which is also automatic now.

some premiere tweaks you could try

Consider this: every frame of 4K footage contains 4 times as many pixels as HD footage. 4 times as many bits as before. 4 times the computation. Why then would you be surprised that you're having problems editing on a machine that could barely keep up with HD?

I have a 6 year old Toshiba Qosmio, 8 gig RAM. Just finished a 45 minute 4K film without trouble. Yours might be a compatibility issue. My specs are much lower than what you have and I work just fine.

I have the free VLC player but I have no idea what codec(s) it uses. Must be something from the K-lite pack because that's all I ever installed. However, my laptop screen is not 4K, so I am not really watching UHD.

OK so I upgraded today

i7 Intel 4.2ghz 32gb ram GTX 770 nvidia graphics , (will upgrade to a power card soon )

Still VLC and 5k player will not play back the 4k files ,

so this is a configuration and codec problem , I've spent hours looking into this ,

Do you use a stand alone player to watch 4k files ? if so which one and what codec settings ?

This has really thrown me I have to say

What is the format/codec of the 4K footage you're trying to play? Not all 4K is created equal.
