Color Noise in DNG
on Dec 14, 2016 at 10:43:50 pm

Hi All

Has anyone noticed that Premiere introduces color noise into imported DNG sequences?
It doesn't happen when I import into After Effects or Photoshop.
If you look at the images below where I have deliberately over exposed them, you can see that the top one has no color noise, its just has normal noise. But the image below it from Premiere it has lots of color noise in it. Its also quite blurred compared to the top image.

Does anyone know how to get Premiere to work like After Effects or Photoshop?

Any help will be greatly appreciated ☺

Thanks

Are you guys not replying to this because you haven't experienced it before or is it because you don't have a solution?

AE and PS take an image at their original resolution, for example 300dpi, when you bring an image into Premiere it converts the image to video resolution, 72dpi. It is interpreting the noise in the image as best it can for video, which is not very pretty. One solution might be to do some noise reduction on the images before they get to Premiere.

Hi, thanks for you reply ☺
I see what you are saying, but when I convert the DNGs into something else like a PNG sequence so it is no longer a raw format, the problem doesn't happen. The noise is normal. So I think its something to do with the way Premiere handles RAW.

I never tried dropping RAW images into Premiere before, I usually process them and make them into a lighter file for it to handle like PNG. I guess a RAW image is data overload, TMI, for Premiere.

Yeah as you say maybe its too much for a program like Premiere to handle as its for realtime editing. Its a shame though as it creates an extra step in the workflow. What I have been doing is creating flat images from the DNGs so they are more like v-log footage, that way I can still do all my color grading in Premiere where I get instant results, as apposed to having to render everything in After Effects. I know this kind of sounds backward by using RAW and then flattening it, but my Canon EOS 7D cannot record good quality video unless I use Magic Lantern and record RAW. If I had something like a GH4 then I would obviously record as V-Log footage in the first place.

Nothing is ever straight forward, the creative process always involves a series of work-arounds.

Yeah totally agree with that. What kind of things do you make?
