Everything I've read thus far suggests this is not possible, but I can't find any clear info on what exactly preview and render files consist of, so I just wanted to check.

I understand that render files are created to play back media with effects , or play back media that gives the timeline trouble. Are they video files, or processing info?

Essentially my question is; could you replace the original lost video files with preview files generated from rendering that video? I would also like to know this in regards to After Effects. I'm about to delete my cache and there's a few bits I lost I wouldn't mind getting back. I'm on a mac, and I'm seeing a lot of .mcdb (database I assume?) and .ims files.
