Hello all,

I had a lighting issue on set when filming a presenter - I hoped that I would be able to salvage the infinite white background in post.

I've managed to desaturate the background using secondary colour correction on the 3 way corrector menu, but I'm not sure how I can turn the grey of the background into white without affecting the presenter.

Here is the original:

And here is what I have managed so far:

Any advice would me much appreciated.

P.S. This is my first post on Creative Cow - so apologies if I've done made some kind of mistake

If your heart is set on a pure white background, you'll have to separate the subject from the background. I doubt it can be done in PP. It. CAN be done in After Effects.

But if you don't already know AE, and your deadline is anything less than a month away, I don't recommend it. To use AE successfully, you have to know the basics. It's just too weird in how it works... and it takes time to get over the weirdness.

I suspect it can be done with masking and luma keying.

I won't say it will be simple. I will say I bet it can be done in Premiere.

This can be done pretty easily in AE. Bring the midtones up with curves, add the extract effect and bring down the white point until you've got rid of the background. You'll probably need to do this separetely for the face (because it'll blow out with the curve adjustment) and the lower part because the background isn't evenly lit. Precomp the layers and use that as an alpha matte for the clip.

Thank you very much!

From your brief description I managed to get it 99% perfect (apart from a bit of arm hair - barely noticeable)

Here is the before and after...

After completing and exporting the video and watching it full size, the jagged edges do seem more noticeable, along with the little bit of white that keeps moving with his left arm..

Do you know of any way that I would be able to smoothen this out?

If you did this in AE then you could use the refine matte effect on the matte layer to clean the edge.
