Hi,

after using FCP X for a while, I've learned to appreciate some of it's workflow hacks and smooth approaches to the plain editing, that Premiere Pro seems to be lacking.

But maybe I'm wrong and you guys can teach me how to achieve this in PP since my clients force me to use it when I'm in their office.

Is there a hotkey combo to trim the beginning or the end of a clip? Like, when I'm with my playhead near the end of a clip, I wanna press these two buttons (like in fcp x) in order to trim away everything that comes after OR before the playhead?

It's such a handy tool in FCP. In Premiere I always end up doing it either with the mouse (which totally sucks), or trimming it manually with the . or , keys...

Thanks in advance if there's a way to do this!!

Try pressing the "Q" and "W" keys. :-)

First I wanted to yell:

"SWEEET you're my hero today!!! Thanks!!"

but then I saw it doesnt do what I want, cause it doesnt just affect the selected clip, but also messes up the entire timeline

:/

If I understand correctly, what you want is typically called "top" and "tail". This trims everything at the head or end of the timeline with a single keystroke. Media Composer has this also, but as a command that's basically a macro. I'll have to look to see if Pr has something like this when I get back to a system. Obviously you could do this with a series of keystrokes, but I'm not sure if there's an actual top or tail command.

Just to clarify, do you want to trim the beginning or end of the whole timeline, or of specific clips within the timeline? If the latter, do you want it to ripple or leave a gap?

I just wanna ripple a particular clip, without auto cap closing.
Maybe this isnt even possible in PP, because of the lack of magnetic timeline..

[Christoph Heimer] "I just wanna ripple a particular clip, without auto cap closing. "

I'm confused. Rippling by definition means that the deleted gap is closed. So what do you mean? In X if you delete the head of the clip it ripples the rest of the timeline forward so no gap is left. If you do the same but with the position tool activated, it leaves a slug or gap.

[Christoph Heimer] " it doesnt just affect the selected clip, but also messes up the entire timeline"

In that case, lock the tracks you don't want affected.

haha, well if I first have to lock other tracks and stuff, it'll be faster to just trim the track by hand with my mouse :(

Hi...

wouldn't we be doing an extend edit here? Extend works head or tail, on multiple tracks, and ripple depends on the trim mode you're in with you extend (which you can cycle thru with the keyboard)

Extend can lengthen or shorten.

The longer I think about this problem, I think it's not possibe in Premiere because of the way how the timeline works.

I was reading to the end of this and was going to suggest Derek Lieu's post as well if the question wasn't already answered. It's a great resource. Here is his whole blog post on setting shortcuts in Premiere to be more like Final Cut X (or 7 if you want) http://www.derek-lieu.com/2014/07/08/26-simple-tricks-for-faster-editing-pr...

This little lesson taught me once again why FCP X isn't so bad after all anymore.. it's really more fun to just EDIT with it, than in premiere, at least for me.
Not talking about the whole workflow with after effects and other 3rd party options, but yea, just editing..

Yeaaa well, but still it's not comparable to copy pasting clips from premiere to after effects and dynamic linking to aep comps.. Anyway, thank you all, you really helped me!
