Hi all,

I've been experimenting with YouTube's closed caption creation tools and using 3rd party downloaders to extract the .srt file from the video.
Even if I download the 1080P version of the video, the caption file gets interpreted by Premiere as a 720x480 and when I export the video, the captions get cut off...

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Hi Steve

You could try converting the SRT to an MCC, and then import that input Premiere. We have a beta converter online that's free to try, if you want to give it a go:

James,

Thanks! It does work, although the SRT file was set for 2 lines of captioning and your converter changed it to three lines. Any way to change that?
Also, the captions embedded perfectly fine in a burned in version of an output mp4, but what would you recommend as the sidecar format so that one could turn on or off the captioning when they wanted?

Thanks much!

Steve,

I don't believe we can set the number of lines to use from a subtitle to a caption format, but it's something we should probably add. For a sidecar, it would really depend on the target player. WebVTT is nice and standard, and would work with most web based systems. MCC/SCC and others will work with more advanced players, but not the web ones.

James,

Also, Premiere shows that the images size is 720x480 still, even though the captions don't get cut off...

Hi Steve,

The MCC has no default size, so you may want to try adjusting your project settings before importing. In general, the MCC is associated with 1080p/i or 720p, and SCC is associated with PAL/NTSC.

You might want to check out Subtitle Edit (Windows) or Belle Nuit (Mac). They are free subtitle tools that can manipulate, import and export all kinds of subtitle formats.
