I am using CC 2015, a EVGA GeForce GTX 970 Super Clocked ACX 2.0 Graphics Card, a i7 Core, 16GB of BallStix Memory, Gigabyte GA-Z97X-UD7 TH LGA 1150 Z97 Dual Thunderbolt 2 ATX Motherboard i'm using a plugin called Nodes 2 by yanobox, which does use some 3d and is a bit heavy, but even still should a 5 min HD file rendering at h264 take 30 min?

H.264 is a very processor intensive codec, so 30-mins is not out of line. Your single i7 processor is the issue, and this is why dual Xeon workstations exist.

If you do a lot of h.264 encoding, you can get yourself a Matrix HDCompress card - they are dedicated hardware encoding cards ($500), which will process h.264 5 to 6X faster.

But with an i7, shouldn't it be a bit faster? I've heard a single i7 is faster than two xeons..

A single i7 processor might be faster if your using an app that is not multi-threaded, but Adobe Media Encoder is multi-threaded. It would be kind of silly for Intel to sell Xeon procs if their less expensive processors had better performance, don't you think?

Are you exporting 2pass? The i7 and its h264 acceleration is much faster than the Xeon when you're using single pass h264 encoding which is just fine in most cases. It should export faster than real time.

Just rendered a 5 min h264 shot on h264 Canon 5D and it took about ten min:

Here are my specs at work:

Model Name: Mac Pro
Model Identifier: MacPro5,1
Processor Name: Quad-Core Intel Xeon
Processor Speed: 2.8 GHz
Number of Processors: 1
Total Number of Cores: 4
L2 Cache (per Core): 256 KB
L3 Cache: 8 MB
Memory: 32 GB
Processor Interconnect Speed: 4.8 GT/s

I'm also using a quadcore at home, so not sure where the problem lies.

So not 30 min, but 10 min on an old non accelerated Mac Pro. Seems about right.

That is for my different 'real' mac at work. I am using a hackintosh for the mac in question, same software, same render presets, same codecs.

Hi Benjamin,

Some plug-ins and effects take much longer to render than others. Why don't you do a simple test as follows:

Put a 5-minute clip on the timeline. Do not add ANY effects. Export to H.264. How long does it take? Now add your effects, and export again using same export settings? Takes longer, right? That is the effects "tax" being paid.

I bet that a plain clip without effects will be close to 5 minutes, give or take. Assuming you have fast drives. You didn't mention the drive config.

Thank you

Thanks everyone for your thoughts.

I tried that. Exporting with the Nodes 2 effects (By Yanobox) and without, and it was roughly the same amount of time. I am going to try the same Non-effect export at work, and see the results. It's a custom built Hackintosh, so I'm worried my friend who did the OS install may have not configured something correctly.

Will report updates when I try it out.

For the life of me, I'll never understand why posters like omitting critical info from the initial post and then casually add it in later, only after others spend a bunch of time trying to help...without having all the facts to work with.

"Oh, by the way, what you all thought was a PC is really a Frankenstein box".

So please clarify, are you running Windows or a Mac OS?

Thanks

Jeff

In my previous post I mentioned I was using OS, Mac. It's a hackintosh, also as I stated above.

Except for the bits about being a MacPro 5,1.
