I am a recent convert from FCP, I am used to being able to output as a quicktime movie, and not select "make movie self-contained" this would output a video that referenced existing render files, and was output very quickly and small in size. Is there a way I can do something similar to this in Premiere? If I click match sequence settings it still encodes the video and takes a long time.

If you are using formats supported by Smart Render, then that might be a possible workaround. That said, Premiere and AME do not currently support reference movie export.

For more info on Smart Render, see Alex's link above or Kevin Monahan's blog

You can also enter a feature request for reference movie export: http://www.adobe.com/products/wishform.html
