Hello Folks,

I've recently switched from CS6 to CC2014.2 v.8.2.
2013 Macbook Pro
NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M
OSX 10.8.4

After experiencing instability in Premiere Pro CS6 with CUDA, I decided to delete the divers from the system and went with OpenCL. Things went well.
Can someone please tell me what is the best way to move forward with the hardware I have and CC2014.2 v.8.2?
Is there really any advantage to using CUDA or OpenCL on this hardware?

Much appreciated and kind regards,
Jona

CUDA is more mature and Nvidia only.

OpenCL works for both Nvidia & ATI but is less mature.

If I was on your system I would be using CUDA

Thank you Chris.

I'm running 6.5.51 on CUDA. Are there separate GPU drivers other than the CUDA drivers? Would I do a Mac Software Update to obtain these GPU drivers? I see that there is another OSX update available (10.8.5) but I don't want to update unless it's absolutely necessary.

Any thoughts?
Jona

After running on CUDA I can confirm that there have been problems. Hangs on closing project, Media pending etc. So I switched back to Open CL.
Maybe I need to update to 10.8.5 to mitigate this but I read that this update could cause my Mac to run as much as 30% slower so I'm not sure if I should do the OSX update.

Can someone please confirm their experience on the best way to proceed?

Kind regards,
Jona

Jona, I had those same issues with 2014.2

for me here on two different macs it was unuseable so I reverted
to 2014.1 and have not had issues.

The cuda update can be downloaded from Nvidia or updated
in system preferences cuda panel. The video card driver
can be downloaded from Nvidia website.

I have quadro 4000 card and a GTX 680

Hi Chris, thank you for the reply.

Can you tell me how to revert to 2014.1?

Also can you tell me if you are running CUDA in 2014.1 and if it makes any significant difference? As far as I can tell, on a Macbook like mine, this CUDA, OpenCL makes little or no difference. Of course I'd like to be proven wrong but for me it has only caused problems.

Thank you again for your time and participation here :)
Jona

to Revert you would need to uninstall 2014.2 completely, then logon to creative cloud
and somewhere in there they give you options to install an older version.

Thats where 2014.1 should be found.

CUDA makes a HUGE difference on the Quadro 4000 cards.

I had to remove one from another workstation for a possible rma and I noticed
some projects needed rendering where they didn't before with the quadro and cuda enabled.

Rendering in the timeline and exported content that is resized goes much quicker
as well with CUDA enabled.

Thank you for the extra insight Chris.

Seeing as I am running a NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M, it doesn't sound like there will be any kind of difference in speed so I think I just going to continue on with OpenCL as a way to mitigate any issues I normal have with CUDA.

Also, can you or anyone comment of whether or not 2014.1 is better that 2014.2?

Can't really help with the issues you're having with CUDA, other than suggesting to reinstall the latest version of CC, and update/reinstall CUDA drivers. I have been using them and it's been fine for me. I just tested the latest 2015 MBP compared to the 2014 with 750M (basically rebadged 650) and CUDA works quite a bit faster 20-30% compared to OpenCL on the same laptop.
