Looking at getting a new laptop, and saw this at Best Buy for 1K. Quite the price for a 1T hard drive, 12 GB RAM, Intel Core i7, Ultra 4K.

I would use it mostly for PPro, AE, and Avid Pro Tools.

Anyone out there have it? Any thoughts on if this would be a good editing laptop? I have great near eyesight, so the 4K could be amazing in an editing laptop.

I look forward to hearing what you all think! :)

Thanks a ton,

It's got a few issues that would probably cause problems with editing.

1 - Max RAM - 16GB

2 - Single 5400rpm Hard Drive

3 - USB 2.0 only ( I'm amazed that this is even still implemented).

4 - Relatively low powered and unsupported GPU - AMD Radeon R7 M270. The M260 version IS supported, so the 270 will probably work.

The lack of output ports of any type other than USB 2.0 all but eliminates the ability to add a external media drive or RAID, and there is no mention of a 2nd HD bay inside.

Thanks for your input, Steve. This actually has 2x USB 3.0 ports, and 1x USB 2.0 ports. I confirmed that in person at Best Buy yesterday.

Currently my laptop is 8 years old, a Sony VGN-FW235J, so while I can understand that the GPU and 16GB RAM may not be up to your standards, they are lightyears above what I've been editing HD on for nearly a decade. I should clarify that I don't anticipate editing much 4K for clients, HD only.

Knowing that, what are your thoughts? I do understand the 5400 drive speed being a problem, but am I correct in saying that if I have my media on external 3.0 drives it should be acceptable?

I absolutely love the idea of a 4K screen. My eyesight is excellent, and I would rather have a higher resolution, smaller screen than a larger one. Just further info.

Also, any other laptops out there in the $1K - $1.3K mark that you would recommend over this?

Thanks for your input,
Justin.

Sorry, I was going by their site entry for that model. Perhaps the actual store models are of a different config.

Wow. That is a major oversight on their end.

Does this AMD GPU have CUDA? Isn't CUDA required for some Adobe products?

CUDA (NVIDIA)and OpenCL (AMD) are not required for Adobe products although a lot of the professional apps greatly benifit from using the technology. Here's a link to more info about GPU acceleration.
