I bought and installed CS5.5 a few years ago but didn't use it that much, instead clinging to the dying FCP 7 platform. Now I'd like to take a realistic look at Premiere Pro as a possible replacement. There are huge changes from 5.5 to 6.0 so I'd like to get on the current version to see what it can do. Is there any upgrade path still available without resorting to CC?

Not my monkeys. Not my circus.

CC is the only option for moving forward.

However you can download a full 30 day trial of the entire creative cloud to test out any and all software to your heart's content.

Tom,

Don't let the whole subscription vs ownership argument get in the way of business. The folks caught up in that in discussion are a) missing out on the most complete solution in the market; and, b) either miscalculating the cost, or simply living a myth based upon "false economy."

Not one of the current crop of NLEs is perfect, however the complete Adobe suite of apps offers terrific value that supersedes all others in terms of the vast toolset offered for the price. While FCP X advocates may argue that X is a better value, at only $300, by the time all the necessary plugins and addons are purchased, the cost can easily be much, much higher.

I'll add my voice to the CC supporters. I was skeptical as well, but no more. The regular updates and access to the entire Adobe Suite you get is absolutely unparalleled. I effing love it.

I've been using it for two straight years, and never once, never, not a single time (did I mention never?) had an issue related to licensing. The only major issues I've seen are some easily work-aroundable video-card related glitches in Yosemite, and of course, the inevitable faulty-keyboard-to-screen-meat-to-hardware errors (i.e., user error).

The people who are holding out on CS6 are kidding themselves. Adobe is NEVER going to go back to the old model. Why? They get a regular infusion of dollars that can support a development team that is devoted to literally doing one thing: supporting and improving that software. The users get faster iterations on the software, and constant bug fixes, updates, and improvements.

Is it better to spend $1200 to upgrade to a new version of the partial CS suite every two years, or better to pay $600 a year to have access to ALL of Adobe's apps? Seriously, you probably pay more for your cell phone and cable bill, INDIVIDUALLY, than you will pay for Adobe CC every month.

[Tom Matthies] " Is there any upgrade path still available without resorting to CC?"

Yes, you can still buy CS6 from Adobe's site.

That being said, the current version of PPro is much, much better and more feature filled than CS 6 so if you want to take PPro for a test run you are doing yourself a disservice by going with CS 6, IMO. If you have a complete moral repulsion to Adobe's subscription plans then either buy FCP X or Avid, or even wait for Resolve 12 to drop in a few months or check out Lightworks, but don't drop hundreds of dollars on software from 2012 as a replacement for you software from 2009.

I think it was Andrew who replied to my query when I was in the same situation. Tried the PrPro CC trial and never looked back. I use both Cc and FCP X. Having fun with both.
