Editing MOV Files really slow on my system

Good Day All,
I have a problem regarding a monthly project that I do. I would like to switch over to Premiere Pro 5.5 from FCP 7. Before, in FCP 7, I would transcode MTS files and also put into the timeline some MOV files that I have been provided. They are all converted into ProRes in FCP 7. My problem is, that now, even if I use the converted files or the RAW files, it still doesn't run seamless in Premiere. In FCP it did, but I had a bit of botch up in my system and would just like to switch from FCP to Premiere entirely. (This is the only project that I do now in FCP nowadays)
I would just like to it to run seamlessly. This project always comprises of around 200 clips in either MOV formats or MTS files. All different categories.
What would be my best workflow?
Convert all of them into a format that would work for me in Premiere to run smoothly? (which format btw?)
Always render the timeline?
Stick with FCP 7?
