how do I convert xvid .avi files before importing?
on Feb 24, 2015 at 12:12:42 am

I am working with the following footage and need to know how to convert it before importing.

File type: .avi
Format: XVid (Perian), 640x480, Millions Microsoft ADPCM, Mono, 44.100 KHz
FPS: 30
Data Rate: 7,760.50 KBit/S
Size: 640x480 pixels (actual)

I have been told here on the forum that I should convert the files before importing them into premiere because the xvid codec is too compressed. Right now I can edit the files in premiere unconverted but I have some playback and render issues.

I downloaded mpeg streamclip but don't know which settings to use.

To what format / what settings should I use to convert the files I have. The quality isn't too high on the original footage, obviously, so I don't want to convert to anything larger than necessary.

Thanks for the help -- I am just getting started with video and learning as I go :)

Working with:

-Premiere Pro CS5.5

-MacBook Pro 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 duo, 4GB ram, OSX 10.6.8

-1 TB external hard drive to store footage and projects

- Footage from an old Flip camera: .avi, xvid format, 640x480 pixels, non-HD, 30 FPS
