what is the cause of the flickering black screen?

I am working with video and adobe for the first time and just learning the ropes. I sped up some footage almost 6000% in a short video I just made and after rendering it, there were bursts of flickering black screens throughout the video.

I don't know if this is because some of my settings are wrong or if this is normal for something sped up so much.

I am using the following setup. All of my projects and source files are on the external hard drive that I have.

-Premiere Pro CS5.5

-MacBook Pro 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 duo, 4GB ram, OSX 10.6.8

-1 TB external hard drive to store footage and projects

- Footage from an old Flip camera: .avi, xvid format, 640x480 pixels, non-HD, 30 FPS

Any idea what causes this flickering screen? What can I change?

If you want to see what I'm talking about, the video is at

and the first instance of flickering starts about 10 seconds in.

Thanks!

[Anne Thompson] "xvid format"

I guess that it works as you're able to bring it in but I personally I would not use xvid or divx or other not officially supported codecs.

Would you convert the files beforehand?

To what format would I convert them? Could I do this with MPeg Streamclip?

Thanks :)
