According to the following audio, markers are written to the media file.

Does that mean it changes the original media file or it writes that info into a sidecar XMP file?

[Yair Bartal] "Does that mean it changes the original media file or it writes that info into a sidecar XMP file?"

Depends on what you've selected in the preferences.

Thank you for your response.
Where exactly do I find it in the preferences?
(Premiere pro CC 2014.1)

It depends on the media itself. Things like Quicktime are 'containers' of media and can contain metadata in addition to traditional things like video, audio, timecode, closed captioning, etc. Other formats do not support direct injection of metadata. These include things like MXF files. When we can write into the media itself, we will. If we can't, we will write a sidecar XMP file adjacent to the media. With Premiere Pro CC2014.1

You can find more about it here: http://helpx.adobe.com/premiere-pro/using/preferences.html#media_preference...

Thanks Dennis for the info.

My question still holds:
Specifically, are markers written directly to any media file (like say Quicktime).

For Quicktime, yes.

Hey Dennis…

this seems odd to me….

a media asset lives in a files system….and can be used in multiple projects.

If it's a lengthy asset, it may be that lot of different users may want to mark up a media file many different ways.

Wouldn't this be confusing to have the markers stored in the asset or the assets metadata?

I certainly see some value in markers being independent of a given project as well…

Maybe I'm not thinking it thru.

Hi Alex,

The reason we will try to inject the metadata into the file if possible is that it cannot then be lost. We also allow for saving the metadata in a project only so that you don't have the situation that you describe.

Hope this helps,
Dennis

Got it! Thanks!

on a side note…

I think I'd like to do a feature request tho….option to always select sidecars. I've noticed that some ppl want the data, never want the data embedded even if the coiner supports it.
