CUDA vs OpenCL, MacBook Pro

I have a MacBook Pro, which I specifically bought earlier this year to get CUDA GPU enhancement with CS6.

In the latest version of Premiere Pro, I now have an option for OpenCL as well as CUDA (before OpenGL was not available). In fact, now all new projects default to OpenCL, and it is changing my old projects that were set to CUDA to OpenGL.

I have tried flopping back and forth, I haven't noticed a big difference in performance. I have some RED 4K sequences with some 5D 1080/720 shots mixed in, and MAYBE those play back a bit better in CUDA over OpenCL?

My instinct is that because the MacBookPro has NVidia cards, and that CUDA is a brand-specific NVidia platform, that CUDA should work better for my setup? And that OpenCL would be better suited to non-NVidia cards?

But I have also read that OpenCL is faster than CUDA?

And the fact that CC 7.2 is changing all my old projects from CUDA to OpenCL, and is defaulting to OpenCL, suggests that Adobe REALLY wants me to use OpenCL now.

Thoughts?

I think OpenCL was adapted more than anything to make the ATI cards
work as GPU accelerators.

SO should I manually switch all my projects to CUDA or leave as OpenCL?

Hi Brian,

I recommend setting the renderer to whatever setting you feel is more stable and provides the best performance.

In my testing CUDA performs better in most cases.

Thanks. Then why is it that (at least of of 7.1) Adobe is changing the GPU setting of all existing projects to OpenCL?

And (as of 7.2) I just opened an old project, and it was set to Software Only?

Shouldn't it just leave everything as CUDA, and make all new projects as CUDA?

Right now Open CL is definitely not faster than CUDA in any application that has both. I am not sure where you read that but that is absolutely incorrect. I would suggest you set it to CUDA if you want better performance. Nvidia GPU's also do not work as well with Open CL as they do CUDA BTW.

[EricBowen] "Right now Open CL is definitely not faster than CUDA in any application that has both."

That has been my experience as well.

I would only use it if I had to...in the case of having an ATI card.
