no prores output ??
on Nov 5, 2012 at 4:32:59 pm

Anyone knows if by installing FCPX, Prores will be available to other apps, like Premiere and AE CS6 ?? This was the case with the fcp7.

I just install FCPX and i still can't output to prores in Premiere or AE. Thx

Apple kept Prores under very tight control, only allowing its format to be output by a handful of manufacturers hardware. As a result of this, you'll only find the capability to read Prores formats in AE and PPro, but not to output them. If you do a search on Prores in these forums, you'll find a list of the hardware which does output to Prores.

And that said, if you don't mind going under the hood a bit, you can get Prores output from FFMPEG:

http://ffmpeg.org/

It just takes a bit of work, and I haven't tried it, but I'm sure there's someone in this forum who has.

not sure about AE....

for PPro...you might need to jump into AME and set it up there first....

then it should be available in PPRo...

Is ProRes not available in the export settings under "QuickTime"? You may have to access the codec from the video tab in the exporter panel, but AFAIK, installing FCPX, or even Motion should put the ProRes encoder on a Mac.

It is limited to read only on Windows.

How do you know this? Can you walk us through the steps you're taking?

Have you found all he rest of the QuickTime codecs?

FCPX is built on the AV Foundation framework, not QuickTime. The FCPX installer does not include the QuickTime versions of the ProRes codecs.

To use ProRes in Ae/Pr/AME/etc., download the QuickTime codecs here:

Just giving it a dramatic pause :)

Happy to help.

Good info Walter...does Motion install the legacy codec?

This sheltering of ProRes by Apple is getting even more frustrating than it has been in the past.

Motion will install the Prores codec and it will be available to other QT apps.

[Tim Kolb] "Good info Walter...does Motion install the legacy codec"

I'm not sure. Motion 5 and FCPX do share a common rendering engine, so it'd certainly be plausible that the same QT codec issue would be there.

Indeed. I'm looking forward to the emergence of an alternative.

I agree. An alternative to prores is clearly needed - hopefully just in time for CS6.5? Although Avid DnxHD exists - it still relies on a quicktime wrapper which is a bit of a pain when working with Windows OS machines. I hope Adobe comes up with a codec that is both smooth for Windows and Mac - preferably a different container.

Are you aware of MXF OP1a AVC-I 100? Its a standard for European broadcasters and its similar to Prores / DNxHD in that its very clean and makes reasonably sized files. You do need the VLC Player (Free) in order to view it. Ive switched to it as my mastering and intermediary (exprting from AE) codec). It renders out of PrP about 2X faster then the other 2.
