Alpha Problems
on Dec 29, 2011 at 8:23:39 pm

On my timeline I have 2 video tracks. Track 1 is my main content and Track 2 (above track 1) I have placed a video that has an alpha.

All looks good and renders out fine.

I then added a "levels effect" to Track 1 and instantly my alpha looks like a bag of hammers. If you mute the effect the alpha goes back to normal.

Any Idea of what I am running up against here?

Any input would be appreciated.

Paul

Mercury enabled Levels control or regular old software one?

Is it possible to test it with the non mercury version?

I'm merely guessing...

If you look in the effects panel...you can sift the listings to show you accelerated or non accelerated versions of fx. I may be wrong about that....As I'm not in front of it, I can't verify...

Alex

Within project settings I switched from Mercury Playback Engine (CPU acceleration) to Mercury Playback Engine (software only). Is this what you were suggesting? If so, it corrected my problem with banding. I got my project out the door and now I would like to get to the bottom of this.

What does this mean? Do I have faulty hardware? Any Ideas?

Thanks for your help.

Are you running a CUDA approved card (I.e., Nvidia 4000)?

Here are the tech specs. Hopefully this helps.

System/Software
HP Z400 Workstation
Matrox MX02LE
Windows 7 Profesional - Service Pack 1
12Gb RAM
Adobe Production Bundle Suite 5.5
NVideo Quadro 4000

Sequence Preset
Matrox - HD 1080i @ 29.97

Source Media Vid Track 02
After Effects composition - 1080 x 1920 @ 29.97
lower third scrolling text
Rendered as - Matrox AVI uncompressed RGB + Alpha

Source Media Vid Track 01
Line Cut - Panasonic HS400 Switcher
Recorder - Panasonic P2 Recorder AJ-HPD2500P
AVC-I 100 @ 1080i 60

In PP I have source media on track 1 and AE lower third scrolling text on Track 2 (above track 1). Everything looks prestine on PP program monitor and on external production monitor. Export timeline and severe banding occurs.

I have attempted exporting AE file in a number of different file types without any difference. I have also attempted exporting PP sequence in a number of different files types without success.

How about something other than Matrox code? Quicktime Animation + Alpha?

Yup, Tried Animation with Alpha and a slew of others with the same result which leads me to believe it is a premiere issue.

Well...

Flip the Process...

Bring your PPro Project into AE...

add the Alpha GFX there and output as a new clip.

then output through Ppro?

I agree this needs to be addressed...I'm just trying to help you get it done...

Alex

Are you saying this is a known issue?

What I find confusing is the fact that I can lay the effect on my timeline and it previews in real time perfectly without banding. It is only on the render out that it craps out. Why would that be?

to clarify...

Originally I thought the Levels Effect was causing the problem so I removed the levels effect and rendered the timeline to find the same problem with the banding.

Contact Vinay at Adobe Tech Support. Very knowledgeable and nice to troubleshoot problems with. You might get a quicker resolution then on a forum.

Turned off the mercury hardware accelerator in PP and went to software render and everything looks fine now. Not sure what this means but I got my show out for now.

Ok...that was sort of where I was going with my first lkine of thought...

something to do with hardware mercury....that's way I was looking for a non mercury levels filter.

Should have thought of that....good to know though.

thought process might be then....Mercury hardware for perfomance editing...mercury software for final output...
