Best way to make footage smoother in 24p with a lot of camera movement
on Sep 16, 2011 at 5:11:13 pm

Hello All,

I have some footage that was shot in 60i that has a lot of camera movement almost like the cameraman is 'fishing' for a good shot. This is to portray a mockumentary and I wanted to bring the footage down to 24p.

However, the problem occurs when I use Media Encoder and even when I use frame blending, I get a slight blur/ghosting of the image on those quick pans that seems to cause nausea to some of our audience.

Now I'm working with only the 24p footage now as the film has been cut and completed and we are just working on slight adjustments, but I would like for the blur to be resolved in some conversion/encoding process of this 24p material.

Is there a way we can take this 24p material and eliminate those motion blurs at this point?

Hi Mikkell,

Thar's what frame blending is all about, creating motion blur to hide jitter. There are a few options out there, including video copilot's frame rate converter, and Twixtor.

They should both provide much better results, although with the latter, you may see other artifacts such as smearing, especially with lower shutter speeds.

Hello Vince,

Thanks for the advice. Will these two methods be able to take lengthy footage, say an entire 90 minute clip? or is there a limit?

No limit, just render time...
