Sorting order in Icon view
on Jun 30, 2011 at 3:36:17 pm

I prefer to work in Icon view over List view in my bin. However my footage is completely random in the Icon view and makes it difficult to find shots. Is there a way to keep the sort criteria determined in the list view to reveal in the Icon view?

Hi Jim, I see you got no joy on your post.

I too, tend to browse through clips in icon view and have exactly the same problem.

I do not know how to fix it.

Hi Alex,

Yes, I never did get an answer regarding this. It's inconvenient at best to have the thumbnails dumped into the bin randomly as they are. I've heard of some using Bridge to do their sorting but I think the back and forth between programs would be a little painful on certain projects.

Hi Jim,

I just replied to Alex in the "Icon view out of order" thread, so I won't repeat it all here.
http://forums.creativecow.net/thread/3/913330

But briefly it seems the only way to control initial order in Icon View is to have the Bin in Icon View before importing - ie putting the files into the desired order before dragging them in.

Hope that helps,

Rupert

OK So this is a silly bug!... but I just figured a quick solution.
Open the bin in list view so they are in order. Then create another empty bin and set that on into ICON view, then just select all in the original bin and move the clips over into this new bin and they will stay in the correct order. And a bonus... they will maintain this order now even when you go back and forth from icon to list views.
A Pain for sure, but not as painful as it could be.

Good Luck!

This issue used to cause me great frustration too. I don't know when it was fixed, but in my Premiere 7.1, there is now an icon at the bottom of each bin in icon view called "Sort Icons". Hooray!

It also works in the same bin, if you just cut the clips from list view, change (the same) empty bin to icon view, and then paste the clips.
Thanks for this great tip!

Next to the zoom controller on the bin there is a doble arrow icon. You click on it and you can pick how you want to sort it out.

Thanks!

I found the double arrow on the project pane but not on the media browser.

FWIW, I would like to sort the media browser display while in icon view.

Using the media browser sorted by name or in many cases file number, I was able to drag them into a bin all at once in order. I first tried one at a time then two then 10 and then I deleted the clips in the bin and then brought them all in. That import window doesn't work. This worked for me.

Guys, the original problem was related to Premiere Pro CS6, which didn't have sorting option built in. In CC versions there is no such problem, as Alex described - there is multiple sort options. As for media browser the not-so-great workaround is switching to list view, and then on top of the column you can click on "NAME" to set ascending or descending sort.

There is a setting near the thumbnail preview button click the arrow <> up/down to set to arrange by name or any order you like.

Fast forward to 2018 where this is STILL a problem! Yes, people, for real.

- Imported clips from another project
- Sorted by name in list view
- Switch to icon view and order is random
- Select "Use List View" and order doesn't change.
- Try all solutions in this thread, nothing works, bang head on wall

Finally:
- Create new bin, set to icon view
- In first bin, in list view, sort by name and then SELECT FIRST CLIP, HOLD SHIFT, SELECT LAST CLIP
- Drag to new bin, all is well

Come on Adobe, this is ridiculous. Fix it already. People are paying for updates.
