Export settings in Premiere Pro.
on Oct 14, 2019 at 1:13:46 pm

Hello everyone.
I have a 120 minute time line to export in Premeire Pro. What are the best export settings to keep the final film size under a Gb but also keep the video in good quality?
If I use h264 codes (high bit rate, or even medium bit rate) final size comes to 3 / 4 Gb...
Many thanks

Any specific reason you need under 1GB? That is really small for 120 minutes. What image size do you need to maintain? If it is a 1080 project, can you drop it down to 720? Also, does the audio matter? If it has surround, or even stereo, can you deal with mono at a lower bit rate? These are all things that can affect the file size.

I need it small-ish for easy sharing. Usually a 120 minute film in ok quality is around 700Mb, so I'd like to match that.
Image can be 720p if that helps or ideally 1080p. Audio doesn't matter.
What are the export setting you'd recommend? I tired many options and I always get either a huge file or a really low quality result (really low!).
Thanks

Easy sharing?
What platform are you using?
That's where it fails most of the time.
I've seen feature-length films as large as 8GB in HD online with no step-down issues.
In this day of age, file size isnt much to worry about.

Ok sure, I understand. I know how to export at 8Gb, but still I'm wondering how to compress to a much smaller size keeping it good quality. Any advice?

The easiest way to share a video these days is to upload it to Vimeo, Youtube, etc and then give someone a link. It allows you to keep it high quality and the size of the file is irrelevant once it's uploaded.

You mentioned earlier that a 120 minute film in "ok quality" is about 700MB. What settings were you using then to get that result? Why not just re-use those settings?

System:
Dell Precision T7600 (x2)
Win 7 64-bit
32GB RAM
Adobe CC 2017.1 (as of 8/2017)
256GB SSD system drive
4 internal media drives RAID 5
Typically cutting short form from UHD MP4, HD MP4, and HD P2 MXF.

[Jon Doughtie] "You mentioned earlier that a 120 minute film in "ok quality" is about 700MB. What settings were you using then to get that result? Why not just re-use those settings?"

This baffles me too.
I guess we all have different opinions on "okay" these days.
Most of my clients expect the worse when dealing with full feature-length projects.
I have a rule on my frame io site where if it has to sit longer than 5 days online then they start paying my overage account.
I don't mind the hit temporarily but after that, it's just too costly.
On Dropbox I don't charge, they can have it for 90days no questions asked.

Filesize = bitrate x duration.
So tweak the bitrate.
