Fusion node map for scene with multiple tv screens
on Nov 22, 2019 at 1:36:03 pm

Help for a Fusion newbie please. I have a scene where we track through a room with multiple tv screens in view, each showing different content. In Fusion I've got one TV displaying well using a Planar Tracker.

I'm trying to figure out what my node map should look like, to control multiple inserts? Attached is my solution for three screens, but I've reached a dead end, since you cant attach three TVs to the final output.

Is there a special merge node that display multiple sources as one?

I've been advised to
* add multiple corner trackers in a single planar tracker node.
and/or
* do a 3D track and then use image planes to replace the screens.

Pointers to how to to this much appreciated.

You might find this tutorial useful

Planar Transform is your friend and makes it far easier to work with the Planar Tracker result.

Many thanks Simon! I'll give this tutorial a go.

What i'm particularly struggling with is the node layout for *multiple* inserts. IE, to do what you do in your Planar Tracker video, but with several screens.

I'm sure it's very simple (merge-nodes?), but I haven't figured out the wiring for more-than-one insert. A back-of-an-envelope diagram would be a great help!

You don't mention whether or not your TVs are all on the same plane or whether they are at angles to each other and hence require a different planar track for each.

Hi Simon,
They are on different planes.

Ah, OK.

In which case this screenshot is a little simpler than you'll need because you'll have various detached Planar Trackers nodes hanging around.

I've shown you how to composite three different TV inserts for demonstration purposes.

I cannot stress enough that you should not do what the cheap and nasty tutorials show you, which is to use the Planar Tracker to create the composite.

In order to get a decent result you really do need a Polygon Mask for the TV screen so that you can get the edges precise and appropriately soft.

This is where using the Planar Transform makes it clean and easy because you can apply it independently to your mask and to your insert.
