Problems re-linking Proxy timeline with original BRaw Files
on Aug 15, 2019 at 12:45:05 pm

Hi,

I have some very annoying issue:
Editing currently a documentary, shot with GH5 & the BMPCC4K.
For the editing on the AVID system we created Proxy files of both cameras' rushes.

In our usual workflow, we re-link in the OnLine (DaVinci) the timeline back to original camera source files.
With the GH5 material it works like a breeze as usual.
But when pointing DaVinci to the Folder of the BlackMagic BRAW files, it keeps saying, that it does not find any matching footage.

How come?

Any idea, to where the error could lay, is highly appreciated!

Thanx.

Best,
Sascha

Well the first thing would be to check: do the proxies actually match the originals in timecode/reel and/or other metadata?

Hi Tero,

Of course, first thing I did.
All Meta Data just fine.
First time ever, since I make proxies with
DaVinci that I encounter such an issue.
If I select one clip, I can force it to relink with the “replace footage” command.
But doing that one by one for more than 500 clips is ridiculous.

Sascha.

Import the original footage and conform from the media pool.

Double check that frame rates weren't converted in one of the programs.

Never used Braw, but that is a common problem as well when going amongst programs with other clips.

Hi Glenn,

At the moment everything is still in the same application, DaVinci.
Since it's also my first time I wanted to test drive the workflow, before the offline comes back from AVID.
So, all proxies were created in DaVinci, it kept all MetaData intact, including time codes and frame rates.
That's exactly why it's so weird,
Also my first time to work with BRaw, and that's why I feel a little lost, since I never had an issue like this in DaVinci ever before.

Sascha.

Yes, the material is of course in the media browser. Yet, it's not possible to re-link, mainly cause DaVinci claims to not find any matching material in the pointed folder, even though it contains the right rushes.

Do you see a reel name in the reel name column? Relinking is very simple, it just needs to match reel name and time code. That only works if you've enabled the "assist using reel names from" option. If you don't see entries in the reel name column on the media page, and if those entries don't match those of your proxy files, it will not relink. If they do, it will (assuming the time codes also match).

As I wrote before: all matches: TCs, Reel names, FPS, everything.
I also tried all variations in the assist preferences.
No luck.

I know I'm sounding a bit pedantic here, but if everything matched it would relink, so something doesn't. You need to determine what that is.

As I said: that is exactly, why it’s weird and I assume it’s a big:
Everything is matching 1 on 1.
Compared all meta data. In the same batch process i did the H.264 10 bit
GH5 proxies ... and they all work perfectly.
Only the BRAW is in strike.

Hi to everybody,

It seems to be indeed a bug or short coming of Version 15.
In Version 16 it does re-link without a problem.

Just not sure if I want 16 already... usually I don't trust first versions of an upgrade.

BRAW has developed quickly since 15 so maybe that version was having difficulty recognising the BRAW files if it was shot with the latest camera upgrade.

And I have found 16 Beta more stable and much improved over 15. 16 Release is out. I recommend you use it and if you are worried -

HiMichael,

thanx.
So, in your experience V16 is stable and trustable already?

I will check also your Video regarding keeping V15.

Hallo Michael,

Unfortunately, not working - I upgraded to 16, and still would not reconnect.

And actually, 16 does seem to be way more buggy: Getting occasional black frames flickering into playback without any apparent reason.

I've not heard of any of those problems you are having. 16 has been very stable for me all through the beta phase.

Hey Sacha!

Did you ever find a fix for this? Ii am having the exact same issue, and the folks at Blackmagic don't seem to understand what's going on / can't replicate the issue.

Yes, I did.
Go to preferences -> general and there uncheck the box "Use Mac Display Color Profiles".

At least, that is what I remember solved it.

Dang. So strange, that didn't change it for me ☹

If you remember... when you went to link the proxy files via "Relink Selected Files", were you just getting grayed-out files like the attached image?

Wait, I think we are talking of two different issues now:
One was the flickering screen when playing back timeline,
This was solved by the method I described before.
What you meanness the other issue i had: DVR would not
Relink to the Proxy Files when BRaw is the Master, right?

Correct, the relinking issue between BRAW and other format proxies. Any thoughts? I've been trying to solve this issue for weeks!

Yes. I also solved this one with a workaround:
When I want to change from BRaw to proxy, I delete the BRaw from
The media Browser - footage on TL goes offline.
Then I made a a new bin, imported the proxy file and then it forced relinked
Itself to it.
If you wanna reverse it, do same thing vice versa.

[Sascha Engel] "When I want to change from BRaw to proxy, I delete the BRaw from The media Browser - footage on TL goes offline. Then I made a a new bin, imported the proxy file and then it forced relinked Itself to it."
That is a very clever workaround.

In theory, turning off "use Proxies" and then using "Reconform from Bins" should work. In theory. For a lot of reasons, I'm more in favor of using a manual Proxy workflow where you create physical transcodes, and then we routinely either delete those and bring in the Raw files, or we Reconform from Bins, or we Change Source Folder. One of those will work.
