Double Checking about Remote Grading
on Dec 16, 2011 at 6:43:10 pm

I've never actually done any remote grading yet, though I have read up on it in the manual and several posts in this forum. The manual says, "The DaVinci Resolve version of software must be the same on both systems." I'm pretty sure that I know the answer, but wanted to double check -- Resolve Lite will not accept a remote grade?

I guess this is a feature request, but I'd rather have Resolve Lite be able to accept remote grading rather than unlimited nodes (but that's just because I have the full version). That way a client could install Resolve Lite and I could audition some quick and dirty looks for them, wherever they are, or I am.

Second -- the manual says, "The system resolution must be the same on both systems." This isn't actually referring to the size of the screens used for the GUI, right?

Resolve Lite does not support remote grading.

Regarding resolution being the same at both ends, that is referring to the timeline resolution.

Remote is full versions option as far as i see it.

For remote jobs 1 extra license seems like peanuts

Is it still true about needing a full version of Resolve to do remote grading? The Lite version won't work?

That's correct. Also true for collaborative database.

I am also wondering how the remote grading works on the "client" side. In particular, if I am using my Cubix with 2 GTX 570s and the client is using a laptop hooked up to a firewire drive that contains the footage, what is the response / playback like on the client side? Is it smooth 24 fps like in my suite? Or is it sluggish because the laptop isn't as robust in regards to GPU and RAM, etc.

It will be sluggish in that case. Resolve only sends a play clue, not a media stream or whatever. After the colorist hits stop the timeline of the client will sync up to the position of the colorists' playhead.

Performance on the client machine, will be whatever the client machine is capable of.
