Free DaVinci Resolve workshop available online
on Oct 4, 2011 at 2:00:18 am

Hi guys and gals,
we recorded the DaVinci Resolve that took place in Montreal last week. We now have half of it online and we plan to make it all available by the end of the week. Here is your chance to get into Resolve 8 and learn from Patrick Inhofer.

Part 1:Config, control panels, tabs

Part 2: nodes, master timeline, LUT

Parts 3 and 4 are coming. Clic the video to watch in HD. Feedback welcomed!

Hi, in his demonstration Patrick Inhofer says that per node only one correcion is possible. For example you could not do a primary correction and in the same node in another tap something like a softclip. Is that true?
Greetings
Ingo

[Ingo Schulten] " Is that true?"

A soft clip is not the same as adding a secondary window or HSL qualifier, so in that sense your statement is not true, because some operations can be included in the same node, like curve adjustments, which are still conceptually part of a "Primary" correction.

It is still good practice to compartmentalize your operations so you can stay organized and not go clicking and scrubbing around looking for what is causing something to happen that you don't want. Patrick's observation to think about the nodes as "Rooms" if you're coming from COLOR, is a reasonable interpretation... but don't expect the same behaviours. There is no "inside AND outside" grade in Resolve. You need two nodes minimum to do that. So if you intend to survive with the Lite version, you are going to have to develop some extreme craftiness. Really, you can do a Primary.... and that's pretty much "it".

You mean "Old Ben"? Ben Kenobi?

I could have sworn on some demos i have seen 2 power windows in one node? Say a CPW and a LPW with a to subtract for matte/mask Was I imagining things?
Or was there a mixer node in there i missed?

You're correct. You can have four Power Windows in one node.

Correct. You can have multiple windows in a single node.

But you can't have different corrections inside each window in a single node.

As JPo says, my analogy of thinking of a Node as a Secondary Room in Color falls apart once we get to Inside / Outside operations. Color can do that in a single Secondary (allowing up to 16 corrections within 8 Secondary Rooms). Resolve requires 2 nodes to do the same thing. I should have followed up and shown how to do an Inside / Outside correction in Resolve - which would have made this clearer.

Sorry for the confusion.

Hi guys,
the 3rd part of the workshop is now online. Giddy up for another 45min Resolve video with Patrick Inhofer. Feel free to donate on the Final Cut MTL first page. We do it for free but we still gotta pay our hard drives ;) Ain't Final Cut MTL the best FCP user group?

Here is the link:

*To answer a question, you can have multiple power windows in a node but all will contain the same correction.
