Hello everyone!

Ok, I am new in illustrator, I barely use it...but I was given an Illustrator CS6 file that I must edit. I normally work with After Effects so thought it will be easy to work with layers, but I got stuck with something that seemed obvious to me but can't make it happen...Here it is:

I want to isolate a certain area from an image. Once I trace the area I want (with Pen tool), Illustrator shows me the "path" , which I can copy and paste into another layer, but it does not isolate the image that is inside it, like it normally happens by default with After Effects. I have been trying to do so but can't find the way, neither searching online...I am sure there is a very easy way to do this but have no idea where it is...Can somebody tell me how to do this? I work on a Mac.

Thank you so much!
Esther.

I think you want to create a Clipping Mask.
Select your vector shape and your image, then Object > Clipping Mask > Make.
Note, the vector must be on top of the image.
