Editing Red footage on FCP 7
on Jan 26, 2015 at 5:17:49 pm

Hey everyone

We shot a short film on Red camera (6K and I'm thinking of the best way to prepare it for the editor. Since she want to edit on FCP 7 I was thinking I should transcode the footage to Apple ProRes 422 in 4K using RedCine-X. The requirements of the Mac she has is Intel Core i7 2.9 with 8 GB Ram

would this handle the transcoded footage in FCP 7? or should I go down to 2K?

Thanks

Whats the final output?
Are you round-tripping back up to 4K and up?
ProRes in that flavor will work but of course it will depend on data size (total) and type of RAID used.

FCP 7 only deals with 2k resolution. So you wont get much benefit from a 4k transcode. A 2k transcode would work well.

If you are doing and offline, generate low res proxy files to edit with first. When your done with your offline, you can relink it with the HD or 2k version for your online edit. That would be a faster and more interactive way to edit.

While performance will be better with a 2K workflow, For the record FCP7 can handle the QHD format (3840x2160) for editing since it falls under the 4000px limit.

Thanks for bringing that to my attention. Always thought FCP7 had a 2k limitation.
