4K 16:9 scale down or cropped window?
on May 7, 2014 at 3:23:09 pm

I have some 4K 16:9 .r3d files shot on Red Epic. Is the 3840 X 2160 image scaled internally on the red epic from the 5120 X 2700 at the time of capture or is the 3840 X 2160 a cropped window of the 5120 X 2700 during capture. Need to know this to set up a CG scene and will make a difference.

Cheers

Pete,

I believe that format is windowed. That is, it is cut out of the 5K not scaled from 5K. You can see this clearly if you switch between modes with the same lens attached.

This format exists for it's easy rendering as no scaling has to be done during the render process from the RAW files.

Thanks for clearing that up Dave. I know different cameras handle this in different ways. i.e. Arri Alexa. I did the math on the relevant sensor area to use in tracking software. I fed it into PF tracker with my lens info and it tracked very very close. Once again "The Cow' to the rescue.

Cheers
Peter
