Black line around mask - why?
on Sep 13, 2012 at 2:11:24 am

Hi again all.
Hoping someone might shed some light (ha ha)on this issue I have. Preparing to insert a green screen image into a scene with several layers that I am still working on (my daughter gets married shortly in Greece but I can't make it!! So this video has to suffice.)

The attached image contains a chair, only as a 'test' situation, but it reveals my problem, which I think came up some time ago in this forum but I can't seem to locate it (nor anywhere else for that matter).
Using a mask produces a very narrow black line around the mask's edge, similar to the 'marching ants' in Photoshop, even when rendered. I have played with the 'feathering' feature, in, out, both etc. but all this does is exacerbate the problem by creating a black 'shadow' around the mask.

Incidently, the clip is made up of still .png images. Only the chair is video (1920x1080i)

Hope the images help. And thanks in advance for any help.

I see what you've got. You need to add some Feathering to the Mask's Path. Click on one if the Key Frame Diamonds and select Feather and both and add an amount till that line blends in. You should be good to go.

Thanks for your prompt reply Graham.

What you suggest is what I think I have already tried. Alas, no prize.

And using the various other options of in/out/both I get these results, each of which is a bit weird really. Not working how I would have thought it should. Maybe my copy of computer/video card/Vegas is playing up somehow?;-

Try applying the Pan/Crop POST Chroma Keyer. Like this (just drag it to the end of the chain):

Soooo glad you're still up John. Thanks again, it WORKED! This was so frustrating. Still don't know why this should work like this though. Will have to puzzle that through myself.
But thanks again!!

Ah, yes. That's the same/similar to getting a Border Fx to appear around a Pan/Crop control, move it down the Chain.

I can understand why, you do something and THEN you want "else" applied.

I was suggesting the Feather as what I saw in your first examples didn't indicate you had used it.

Glad you got JR to come in here. He does know Vegas awfully well.

I'm glad that worked Phil. I'm up late because we're preparing some new VASST Plug-Ins for the Vegas Pro 12.0 launch. Do be sure to check them out when you hear that Vegas Pro 12.0 is available. ;-)

For sure John. Very keen.

Not going to get all sloppy, but it's great knowing that you, and several others who are regular contributors and solvers in this forum, are constantly here, with your assistance.

I am an almost daily reader of peoples input on this forum and it almost feels like family, although one that I don't need to feed and that doesn't (usually) answer back.

Now get to bed!

I came here through Google because I had exactly the same answer. And your solution worked like a charm! Thank you!
