exporting EDL
on Jun 7, 2011 at 11:49:23 am

I have a film that was shot on RED and edited in Vegas 9 by the director. Obviously Final Cut Pro is the recommended software for RED footage, but unfortunately that hasn't happened, so now we need to find a way to get an EDL out of Vegas.

We have upgraded to Vegas 10 which should export an EDL - but searching online indicates that there is a problem with projects that are created in vegas 9 - they export crazy numbers all over the place. See below example:

1; 1; 3545.2083; 6464.7917; 1.000000; FALSE; FALSE; 0; TRUE; FALSE; VIDEO; "G:\Frame 137 - RED\D003-090726\A013_0727CR\A013_0727CR.RDM\A013_C002_072778.RDC\A013_C002_072778_001.R3D"; 0; 19728.0417; 28551.9583; 0.0000; 0.0000; 1.000000; 4; 0.000000; 4; 0.000000; 0; -1; 4; 4; 0.000000; FALSE; 0; 0

Here's an edl from Final Cut, which for the most part looks similar to what would come from Avid.

I've spoken to sony tech support but the tech I need to talk to is away for three weeks. Really need help if there's someone out there that knows about this problem!!

You might be using the wrong EDL export. You probably used File | Save As and selected EDL. That's NOT what you want.

Go to Tools | Scripting | Export EDL. That will give you something like this:

TITLE: Journey
FCM: DROP FRAME
001 Journey V C 00:00:00;00 00:00:04;00 00:00:00;00 00:00:04;00
* FROM CLIP NAME: Cam1
002 Journey V C 00:00:04;00 00:00:04;00 00:00:04;00 00:00:04;00
002 Journey V D 030 00:00:00;00 00:00:05;00 00:00:04;00 00:00:09;00
* FROM CLIP NAME: Cam1
* TO CLIP NAME: Cam2
003 Journey AA C 00:00:00;00 00:00:04;00 00:00:00;00 00:00:04;00
* FROM CLIP NAME: Cam1
004 Journey AA C 00:00:04;00 00:00:04;00 00:00:04;00 00:00:04;00
004 Journey AA D 030 00:00:00;00 00:00:05;00 00:00:04;00 00:00:09;00
* FROM CLIP NAME: Cam1
* TO CLIP NAME: Cam2

I'm not sure if FCP can ingest this but it's closer to what you need.

Thanks John. Couldn't figure this out. Was trying to import a Vegas project into Redcine X and it was barfing because I was outputting a text EDL with Save As, rather than using the scripting tool option. Why is this buried in scripting? Should definitely be in the Save As section as it's saving the project in a certain format. I bet MANY people get confused by this! What programs ingest text versions of EDL and why does Vegas only show that option?
