Can't Drag and Drop Media?
on Dec 15, 2010 at 5:07:35 pm

Hello, I just upgraded to Sony Vegas Pro 10, and I'm just started working on a new project and when I try to drag and drop media from a folder to Sony Vegas my mouse turns into a circle with a diagonol line and I can't drop the media into the Project. Is it something new with Sony Vegas pro 10 or is something else wrong?

Sounds like the media isn't being accepted by Vegas. Did that media work for your previous version? I know for example that my Cineform encoded media from NeoScene V1, which worked in Vegas 8 is not compatible with Vegas 10.

It did work in the previous version. But its nothing special, just .AVI, .WAV, .MP3, and stuff like that.

Are you using the 64-bit version of Vegas Pro 10? If so, you will need compatible 64-bit codecs for any formats that Vegas doesn't natively support (or use the 32-bit version of Vegas Pro 10).

If you can't drop a WAV file then something is seriously wrong and I would uninstall and re-install because WAV files don't even use a codec (they are uncompressed).

Ok, but see, the weird thing is that I just got and installed Sony Vegas Pro 10, today. So I should still re-install? And I didn't need codecs before for sony vegas pro 9. So where would I get codecs?

Just to be sure, can you open the file within Vegas pro 10? What about a veg file from Vegas Pro 9?

Is the issue simply that you can't drag from a folder outside of Vegas to a track on the timeline? Or can you not drag from the explorer in Vegas to the timeline?

I'm just trying to narrow down your issue to see if it can be isolated.

I can click on Import and then select a file, but I just can't drag and drop like I used to be able to with sony vegas pro 9. Dragging and dropping is just less time consuming and easier for me.

Just to be sure, can you drag from the explorer pane within Vegas? Also, do you have a video track header on the timeline?

I can drag things around in vegas, just not from an open window in windows explorer to vegas. And how do I put a track header in the timeline? Because I don't think I have one.

Just right click on an empty area of the timeline and choose insert video track and audio track. That should not make a difference.

It is odd that you can drag from the explorer inside of Vegas but not from the desktop itself. I would recommend following John's advice and uninstall and reinstall to see if the error corrects itself on re-installation.

I already have audio and video tracks out. And I still can't drag media and drop it into the project.

Yeah. I said that wouldn't make a difference and recommended you follow John's advice about reinstalling the software. I just wanted to make sure all the basis were covered (troubleshooting) before you had to reinstall.

Ok, I re-installed it. And it still won't let me drag media from any open windows to sony vegas. And I can't drag any media from Vegas to an open window.

Does Vegas Pro 9 still allow you to do this? I would submit a ticket directly to Sony concerning this.

Here is the link: Sony Support

It lets me do it on Sony Vegas Pro 9, just not on Sony Vegas Pro 10.

Do you get the slashed circle as soon as you click on the file, or only when you drop it into Vegas? If it's the former, then Windows is not allowing the click/drag. If it's the latter, have you tried holding the mouse over Vegas for a few seconds?

I've been having the same problem, except Vegas 10 won't let me "File" "Import" either. I shoot everything on a Panny with P2 cards, and it won't recognize the mxf files at all. Until I figure this out, I'm editing everything on Vegas Pro 9. It's been a couple weeks. Any help is appreciated.

[Christina Knickerbocker] " I shoot everything on a Panny with P2 cards, and it won't recognize the mxf files at all."
Vegas doesn't work with native Panasonic P2 files. You need RayLight from DVFilm to make that work.

Are you saying that Vegas Pro 9.0 imports these files? Maybe you have an old copy of RayLight and just need to upgrade it for Vegas Pro 10?

One thought on this, make sure to not have run as administrator checked in the vegas short cut. When I used to run Vegas as admin, I was not able to drag and drop files to the timeline. Running at standard rights allowed dragging and dropping from different open instances of Vegas and windows explorer.

Hi there Nick!

Are you running Sony Vegas 10 'as an administrator' and/or in compatibility mode?

If so; Close Vegas, right-click it's icon and select "Properties", then click on the "Compatibility" tab and un-check the "[ ] Run this program as an administrator", and press "OK".

Now try to repeat the drag-drop.

That solved my problem. I'm using Vegas 9 and was encountering the same drag&drop problem. I unchecked 'run as administrator' and now it works. Thanks

Roger. Thank you for this solution. Found this after two days of searching the internet, posting with Cow and logging with Sony Support. This thread didn't even come up when I searched Cow for drag and drop issues. Stumbled upon it somehow. Very serendipitous!!

I knew I was running SVP12 in Admin mode but can't for the life of me remember why I had to. I guess when things start to go wrong again I will maybe change back and see if I can still D&D (as I used to be able to I might add!!) Aaaaaaaargh.

Hello there, just came here to report my case. I was with the same Issue.

When trying to change compatibility settings I let windows check compatibility issues then it automatically detected that I must use Windows 8 compatibility as i am running windows 8.1. I changed the compatibility settings to windows 8 and it worked.

Then i included the option of "Run this program as administrator" then the problem was still there.

SO this is it. The only thing flagged as active on the compatibility tab on my Sony Vegas 13.0 64-bit is the compatibility to Windows 8. DON'T FLAG "RUN AS ADMINISTRATOR" if You already tried without success.

Thanks You all to remember me of this compatibility thing.
