Open iPhone videos in Vegas
on Apr 27, 2020 at 11:31:17 pm

Hi there, I keep the setting "keep originals" on in my iPhone settings as it's the only way I can seem to copy my iPhone videos to my computer.
Currently, I have to re-encode everything using Handbrake to open it in Vegas.
Is there a codec of some kind that will allow me to open iPhone videos directly in Vegas?

They open in win media player and VLC etc.
I used to be able to.. I think.
Any help appreciated! Thanks
Jono

Do you have QuickTime installed? And if so is it the latest?

Yes. It's version 7.7.9

I remember I had to buy a codec from the windows store to get them playing in windows media player.
That didn't help Vegas play them though...

What type of iPhone footage are you trying to import? avc or hevc? What's the frame size and frame rate?

The problem is V14. You can easily import this type of footage into later versions. I have some sample iPhone11 footage that is the same except UHD (3840x2160 at 60 fps) and it imports into V15-V17, so I assume that FHD (1920 x 1080) could also be imported. If you want to stay with V14, you should shoot using AVC rather than HEVC--in fact, use of AVC rather than HEVC is always recommended where possible. For $150, it's well worth upgrading to V17. Moreover, you don't need QuickTime installed for such footage even though it's in an MOV container.

Hmmmm. Vegas used to play my iPhone videos, and I never had to deal with any of that stuff.
Thanks

If you upload some sample footage that can be downloaded, I will take a look just to confirm.

I am using VP16 and also have trouble with iphone footage. If I import maybe 20-30 clips it will work but at a certain clip threshold it will not and just crashed in the import process or upon reopening. I always have to convert them and often I even have trouble with the converted files and have to create video proxies just to be able to edit them without lag and thats for only full hd, normally I only do that for 4k. I usually use ANYVIDEOCONVERTER, for some reason sometimes that wont work either and the only way I could create a usable MP4 was to put them in camtasia and render as one big file then chop it up in vegas. Is handbrake better for making these usable?

The problem with iPhone footage is that it is variable frame rate (vfr) which you can see from MediaInfo. The ImportAssist tool in HappyOtterScripts enables the user to "rewrap" one's footage and convert to constant frame rate (cfr) video which works a lot better in Vegas. Rewrapping does not change the video stream so there is no loss in quality. The conversion to cfr changes the presentation time stamps to a constant frame rate which works reasonably well unless you really have very large changes in frame rate throughout the video. Actually, iPhone is pretty good in this regard. Another advantage of rewrapping is that it is very "quick" since it is only copying the videostream rather than re-rendering it.

Here's a demo rewrapping some iPhone11 HEVC 4K 60fps video for use in V16.

The alternative to rewrapping is transcoding which re-renders the footage to another format which Vegas can more easily decode. The ImportAssist tool also has options for transcoding to lossless formats such as MagicYUV or UtVideo as well as lossy MP4 formats.

Alternatively, lots of people use Handbrake which works very well although it was not designed for rendering high quality digital intermediates which are preferable. The advantage of Handbrake is that it is freeware. You could also consider using VirtualDub2 which is a lot better for producing intermediates in that it supports lossless formats as well as Cineform and other high quality formats such as GrassValley HQX. Again, this is freeware. Lots of options are available. Good luck.
