4K for a 1080p project
on Mar 21, 2020 at 1:35:16 am

Howdy all,
I'm the music director and video guy for a local (non denominational) church service.
This week they decided to shut the doors due to the virus and only do online (youtube).
I shot the talk etc in 1080p and the music in 4K so I could zoom in post.
I'm done with the music editing and want to put it on the 1080p timeline.
Can someone tell me the best template to use in VP 17 to have it match 1080p please?
Thanks,
Randy

I hate to bump this but I feel sure someone here knows the answer and I have a deadline in about 15 hours.

As this is a week old, I assume you just forged ahead...

When mixing different frame sizes, the Project Settings should match the largest frame size:
In your instance, if your 4K is at 4096x2160, set it to that.
The smaller HD footage will scale up in the Preview Window for viewing purposes.
Do your repositions on the 4K footage.
Then render to the HD frame size.
(The 4K footage will downscale within your project to fit the 1920x1080 frame size.)

I did forge ahead and just put the 4K on the 1080p timeline and rendered out to 1080p.
That said the 4K wouldn't play without lots of dropped frames ...even some after making them proxy files.
I look forward to trying your suggestion Glenn, thank you!

You know what? The way you did it is just fine. I'm used to doing projects that are multi-level and nested where things have to ripple up. Sounds like yours was a simpler timeline, and the zooming into a larger file on your 1080p timeline would look great.

So, ignore my suggestion.

It does look fine once rendered but very difficult to edit the 4K clips.
It seems to me setting the project to 4K as you mentioned above might mean the 4K clips won't studder so bad no?
I will experiment with this and report back if you found the solution...thanks again!

You know what Glenn, your suggestion makes a huge difference so thanks very much.
I suppose I should have thought of that but it started as 1080p and it didn't occur to me to change the settings after bring the 4K clips in...thanks again!
