Downloading HDV footage from a camera with MiniDVD tapes
on Aug 5, 2019 at 6:44:58 pm

I'm trying to download to Vegas some old Mini DVD tapes using a Canon HV20A camera.
So... I'm using windows 10 now and I downloaded the 1394 OHCI LegacyDriver.msi and installed it thinking that would be my first step to resolve the issue but when I opened the device manager it does not show up.
Anyone know what I can do next to resolve my problem.
Thanks
Roger

1394 is firewire. do you even have firewire on your motherboard? I'd try using a virtual machine operating system and install an older OS for something like this. Step 1 in windows 10 was to delete all legacy hardware support. You might need an old hardware machine as well. There might be some 3rd party products that have 1394 for the year 2019, but from what I can remember, 1394 was almost direct IRQ input(lower level than directx)

Hi Roger

As Chris Wright mentioned, Win 10 may not be the right OS to work with.

I for one haven't had the best experience with transferring Mini DVs with Win 10. (I use a ZR200)

The best way I found was to use one of my old laptops running Win 7 (with the legacy driver) and one of my older version of Vegas (V. 9) using the Capture Video feature and dumping everything on an external drive. You can also work with XP, I'm pretty confident you can find one for dirt cheap if not for free.

Cheers !

Hi Roger FWIW I captured from VHS tapes (using Camcorder as pass through) and DV tapes using camcorder directly and Win 10. I purchased a Pcie card from Amazon.

Hi Francios,
Brilliant idea using an old laptop. I simply didn't consider that. I do have an old one with an old version of Vegas and that solves the problem. Thanks very much everyone for the help.

I built my own editing computer. Since Firewire is now considered legacy and not standard input on motherboards I added a PCIE Combo 2x 1394b + 1x 1394a Firewire Ports PCI-Express Controller Card with a Texas Instruments chipset. It works great under Windows 10. I have all the firewire connections and data rates. I have a Canon HV10 HDV camera and it works great with the card. I also input firewire from my old Pinnacle Madras also. The Madras also have SDI. I can input all kinds of analog and digital sources just fine with Windows 10 and Vegas Pro 16. I also do what you are doing with my Laptop and older computer that has a Firewire port. But nothing wrong with doing the job on my fast machine!
