best medium cost video editing system

So I post this here since I use Vegas for many years and after updating to 16 it appears to be time for a new computer.
I've gotten away with some pretty big NO NO's for some time. Only having one hard drive being the biggest issue.

I have unlimited cloud storage with Google Drive and so I don't need a huge amount of HD space what I do is as a project is completed I move it to "online only". All projects I'm actively working on are "available offline" so it's local.

So here is my question: If you were buying/putting together a computer for editing in the $1,500 price range what specs would you suggest and where/brand you would purchase?

I'm always of the thinking to go one generation back in the processor to save money. I believe I need at least 250 ssd, 1tb hd, 16g memory, good video card etc.

your thoughts? Or even a suggestion of a good site to guide me?

I like Intel. i7-8700 cpu would be a good choice. Six cores. Search for systems that use the i7-8700 .. Dell, HP, Lenovo etc. Your choice. TO me, these days, six core is the minimum..

In my opinion the CPU is the most important choice you make. Get the fastest thing you can afford.

It's nice to have a big graphic card, but less important for video editing than the CPU.

When rendering you will need to save it to your hard drive then off load it to the cloud so keep that in mind. I would recommend getting the largest hard drive or SSD you can afford, it seems that they fill up before you know it. I recommend no less than 500 GB.

I have the Sapphire Radeon RX580 graphics card and am very happy with it. VCE rendering really speeds up the process for me. It sells for about $250.

I assume you cannot build your own and you want to purchase an of the shelf system. I recommend building your own if you can build one.

I'm sure I "could" build my own, if it was that advantageous...
but then I have to deal with perhaps a board not playing nice with a processor or whatever
I'd rather pay $100 more and have someone put it together 😉 Now if we are talking $500
that might be worth it 😉

anyplace you look/buy part to put yours together.

thanks

I purchased the graphics card from newegg, https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?item=N82E16814202280 .

I purchased the motherboard, processor, fan and ram were from microcenter.

Personally, I will never use an Intel Core i9-9900K Coffee Lake cpu for a video editing machine - Coffee Lake CPUs have Max # of PCI Express Lanes 16! If you later want to apply for example a BlackMagic Intensity Pro 4K card x4! Then the graphics card speed will go from x16 to x8! The same goes for some motherboards if you install a nvme drive PCIe Gen 3.0 x4!

So Ole, what do you recommend for video editing CPU and GPU ?

Hi Paul !

If I was missing a computer now - I would probably go for one - Ryzen Threadripper 1950X - 16 Cores - 32 Threads - 60 PCIe 3.0 Lanes CPU and a ASUS Radeon VII, graphics Card, PCI-Express 3.0, 16GB HBM2 or GeForce GTX 1080 Ti, 11GB !

If you can wait a bit - then PCIe 4.0 will be twice as fast as PCIe 3.0! DDR5 memory will be twice as fast as DDR4 and so on!

My own outdated computer - I built in 2016 - for Davinci resolve! It is still okay - so I can wait and see !

ASUS X99-Deluxe II, Socket-2011-3 Motherboard, X99, DDR4, 5xPCIe-x16,
Intel i7-5960X - 8 Cores - 16 Threads - 40 PCIe 3.0 Lanes
Cooler Master Nepton 240M CPU Cooler 240mm Radiator
2 pieces - Sapphire NITRO R9 390X - Grafikkort - Radeon R9 390X - 8 GB GDDR5
64GB HyperX Savage DDR4 memory
EVGA SuperNOVA 1300W PSU

C-drive NVME 500 GB Samsung 970 EVO
4 pieces - Samsung 850 EVO 500GB SSD
3 pieces - Harddrive SATA 3.0, 7200RPM

BlackMagic Intensity Pro 4K card
32" Dell 3216Q 4K - Dell 27 P2715Q 4K - AOC 21,5" G2260VWQ6 (Only for Scopes)

I've always built my boxes with Intel chips (except for really low end back in the day that ran terminal emulation) .. but I guess AMD is now for real .. the value is certainly there.

Thanks for the spec. Looks like a beauty.

Hi Paul !

I have also always used Intel CPUs - but you can no longer ignore AMD CPU's - both in terms of strength and price!
