Project properties & Render settings for output Blu-Ray with Sony Vegas Pro 10

Hello !
I'm new in this kind of stuff but I really want to learn.
I have a Canon T2i (or 550d for european) and I want to make very nice blu-ray movies.

If I want the best results, do I need to shoot in 23.98 or in 29.97 ?
This is for my travels souvenirs...

My real question is : when I open Sony Vegas Pro 10, I have a lot to answer in the projet properties and render settings. Maybe someone could help me to fill all the informations correctly ?

All I want is the most beaufiful movie possible on my HD tv (with the blu-ray of course).

Thank you so much for your help !

This is really a personal preference. I like 29.97 because the motion is more fluid. If you use 23.976 you need to shoot carefully so that your pans aren't choppy.

I would use the HD 1920x1080-60i project setting and render to MainConcept MPEG2 using the 1920x1080-60i 25Mbps Blu-ray template. This should give you great results.

Thanks !

Perfect for 60i...but do I need to select progressive (29.97p instead of 29.97i) for my output (blu-ray) ?

My other question is : When my project is done, do I need to RENDER AS or simply BURN BLURAY DIRECTLY ? Because right now i'm not sure what kind of output I have. There's some pixel on my image... Do I need to do something in RENDER AS ?

Thanks again !!!

Blu-ray doesn't support 29.97p so don't bother rendering to that. You need to use the included templates and not change them. Blu-ray supports 29.97fps /60i, 25fps /50i, or 23.976fps /24p. That's it.

As for using "render as" or "burn directly", it depends in if you want menus or not. Burn directly doesn't support menus and render as does.

And my other question :
When I select 5.1 surround for my audio...my output is only stereo...do you know why ?

Thanks, Eric

Is your project set to 5.1 surround? You need to set your project up for 5.1 BEFORE you drop any media into it. This way Vegas will extract the 5.1 audio and not the Stereo audio from the media stream. This is not something you can easily change at the end.

John,
I know this is an old thread but I wanted to thank you very much for your comment above because I think it just saved me from something I have been struggling with. I could not figure out why I was still rendering 'blah' 1080p video when both my project and render settings were set to 1080p. Well because of your comment I realized that when I was building my project I had my project settings set to what it opended up with which was 720x480. I didn't know that changing the project settings later to a higher resolution would not automatically make everything in there to that higher resolution but rather its what the project setting was set at when the clip was added that matters. Unfortunately I didn't understand this until after I had about 30 hours into making a video that I thought was completed. The video quality is so important to me though that I'm going to start it over. I don't think it will take as long the second time and I'll fix some things I didn't like about the first edit.
I looked everywhere for an answer to this and am thankful I read your post.
-Chris

Chris I'm glad you found this post helpful. Getting your project set up properly is the underlying cause of a lot of problems that people have. I can't stress enough how important this is (maybe I should make a tutorial about it) ;-)

You're very welcome.
