save as jpeg with no background

Is it possible to save a jpeg file without the file defaulting to a white background? If I save the file as a photoshop file I have no problem with maintaining a transparent background but when i save a file as a jpeg it defaults to a white background. If anyone knows how to prevent this from happening, let me know how it's done. Thanks!

JPEG does not support transparency or alpha channels. The format I will recommend depends a lot on what your image is.
If it's a continuous tone image (photograph) then maybe consider a TIFF with LZW or other compression (it will be larger than a JPEG).
If it is a graphical element (web graphics) try a PNG. If it's destined for the web you can even use a PNG-8 through the Save for Web & Devices dialog to end up with a file smaller, but with fewer colors, than a JPEG.
A PNG can also work for a photograph but your savings in file size won't be as impressive as JPEG.
