I have been reading this P2 forum in anticipation of getting the 200. So please correct me if I am wrong.

I can connect the HVX200 via firewire to my MacBook Pro and record 720p directly to an external firewire drive. I need to get the card slot to firewire adapter so there are two fire wire ports. Does the drive need to be Fw800. Can you loop thru a Fw400 drive instead of the FW card adapter? Does this method tend to drop frames? Does it need to be a FW 2-drive array to work? Does this work with 1080p settings? Does it work with the Panasonic provided capture software? or Only using capture now with FCP (what version – I have FCP5.1)

Thanks for the info, as I enter the brave new world of tapeless video..

Everything you’re talking about will work fine.

Yes you should have two separate firewire busses, don’t try to chain through. No you don’t need a RAID or an FW800 drive, FW400 is fine. Yes it’ll work with 1080.

There is no Panasonic-provided capture software, on a Mac you’d use FCP 5.1’s “Log & Capture” settings or you could get a program like HD Monitor Pro or ScopeBox.

    Barry,

HD Monitor Pro and Scopebox, way cool… I checked out their web sites, They are the most encouraging part of getting the HVX200..

Do you have a favorite? Have you used them? Do they really work on location? Under stress?

    Thanks Very sweet…

PS where do you get your HVX2oo book

I definitely have a favorite, but it’s not on a Mac. Adobe OnLocation is the greatest disk-capture tool ever created, IMHO.

You can get the HVX Book at Amazon, or on Ebay, or through http://www.dvxuser.com/articles/hvxbook, or at video dealers such as B&H, Abel Cine Tech, Spec-Comm, CineQuipt, etc.

And if you’re working FCP on a Mac- my DVD is the perfect companion to Barry’s:
