Compression and working with 4K xavc files
on Feb 1, 2015 at 8:02:53 pm

So i just upgraded from my 5D mK3 to a sony pxw z100 and have started to work with the XAVC files I have tried Native and optonized media, and using a 4K timeline vs a 1080P timeline and then outputing master files in prores vs h264 files.
My ultimate goal is getting video's to youtube and vimeo in as smaller package as possible but still looking good and so far I am failing, mainly because i live on a small island in the south pacific and my internet speed is close to dial up so uploading large files is out of the question.
So im guessing you feel my pain?

just looking for some advice on workflow and output compression settings

here is the one test video I have done so far https://vimeo.com/118382031

the uncompressed 10 bit file for this 64 sec piece was close to 100 GIG

the h264 I eventually outputted was 75 meg
I also understand most people dont have the ability to view true 4K yet
But after working on this last test project and seeing the quality of my files on my non 5K iMac then seeing the finished product on vimeo it was a big dissapointment

To upload a 1gig file will take me 24 hours but im happy to do it, alternatively i can give files to people to take home and upload them for me .

Would just appreciate any help you guys here on the forum can give me

For best quality follow YouTube's recommendations.

For best quality H.264 encoding use an x264 encoder rather than MainConcept.
If using Apple use High Profile, CABAC entropy single pass encoding.

It seems that you already solved your problem, but still if you don't mind I post here.
For the 4K, that YouTube may not support very well, for the playback may be jerky. Also the XAVC format is not friendly to YOuTube. You can edit your files in FCP or other editing software before uploading to YouTube.
