cut out square in adjustment layer ?

Any idea how to cut out a square or a rectangle in the adjustment layer and have it follow a moving object?

For example making a square around a face of a moving dancer black and white.

I think you just create a mask in the adjustment layer the size of the square you want, apply a desaturation to convert to b/w, then track the layer mask to the dancer. That is if you mean all the square is is a change in saturation.

If you mean an actual square plane, with the person's face in it in b/w, it would be a matter of creating a precomp of the person's face on a square (as in a matted frame), then tracking that to the dancer's moves.

You know what, I don't think I'm clear on quite what you mean. Please clarify a bit more. Thanks.

I mean I need to create a mask the size of the square, i just don't know how to do that.
Everything else I know. I'm an advanced beginner when it comes to AE.

Can't you use the masking tools to make the square the size you want?

Now we're getting somewhere. If you can tell us what version of AE you're using, it will help, because as of the addition of Shapes (I think it was CS3 or CS4, masks started getting a bit trickier. Sometimes you can inadvertently create a shape when you want to make a mask.

You can start here:

I started in the middle and guessed CS4, but you'll notice on that help screen there's a sticky post that lets you choose CS3 or CS5.

I'd create a solid the size you want, track the dancer's face, apply the tracking data to the solid, and use the solid as a track matte for the adjustment layer.
