Mixing time-lapse with realtime in the same shot

Hi, guys!

Not sure if this is an obvious one, but here goes!

I've often seen an effect where, for example, a news reporter walks through a busy train station in real time, while around him the other people stream by in time lapse. To achieve this, is it simply a case of getting a locked-off shot of the people (which can then be speeded up), and then, without the camera moving, shooting the reporter's bit, and finally masking his surroundings out in AE?

I've seen this effect on the evening news, clearly done the same day, so it can't be too hard!

Thanks, guys!

Simon.

For a fixed camera you gave the answer yourself. One thing I might add is that usually the path of the person that will walk real time is determined in advance and the people that walk around for the timelapse part do not interfere with it. If there's a camera move involved then a motion rig is required.

Aha! The missing piece of the puzzle: keep the crowd out of the way! Thanks for the swift response! Makes perfect sense!
