Hey there,

I'm doing a spec commercial for bottled water - we want to put practical bottled water in front of some over the top rainbow laiden backgrounds, very simple / cartoonesque, with straightforward composition. We were going to shoot the bottled water against green screen.

Looking for input on how to re-create the distortion that would occur when looking through bottled water. I have played with some directional blurs that look cool but just looking for input.

We could also shoot the bottled water against a psych wall, and do simple masking around the bottles - the shot will be static, so there would be no rotoing required.

Thanks

That distortion is called refraction -- bending light. It's easy to do in a real 3D application, but a bit harder in After Effects.

Especially if the shots are locked off, you might be able to fake refraction with the Displacement Map effect [link], or perhaps Bezier Warp [link].

Here's a link to a project I uploaded a few months ago of a magnifying glass bar- all AE standard plugins. It may help you with some ideas.

Tried with Bulge, however Displacement Map seems to be better for this job.
Never tried it before, but effect is fantastic, gives lot of possibilities.

Just one quickie:

One JPG for background and one PSD for bottle is all of footages that is used. Some tweaking for water level movement and some speculars on bottle is needed, but, as I said, it was quickie.
