Just installed Windows 7 64-bit and AfterEffects CS5. Did a test render on an existing project and the Render Queue shows that it is only addressing 4gig of RAM. The system has 8.

Is there a setting that needs to be changed, even in CS5, in order to address more than 4gig of RAM? I thought this might be a common issue, but I googled and scanned this forum and couldn't find much.

P.S. Are there any settings that should be tweaked for multi-processing, multi-threading, etc?

If your computer has more than one processor or core you need to enable multiprocessing in After Effects Preferences> Memory and Mutliprocessing.

However, 8Gb of RAM is not really sufficient to take advantage of multiprocessing since each process can access 3Gb.

AE CS5 on a 64-bit system does away with those old memory limitations.

I'd suggest looking in Preferences > Memory & Multiprocessing, and checking the amount of RAM reserved for other applications.

Brian's link is the best place to start on memory settings. That said, 8 GB of RAM is not a lot for AE, especially once you take multiprocessing into account. I'd say you'll get better performance leaving a little bit of RAM unused than you would maxing everything out and forcing your system to swap during render.

I'd also check the System Requirements for AE 10. I'm not really sure if 64-bit XP is even a recommended OS for it.
