This is sort of an AE question, although I'm just trying to figure out how to achieve an effect.

I'm doing an ad that will be played all in reverse. At the end of the ad, I'd like the actor to say a line. Obviously, I want this line to be delivered so that you can tell what she's saying, it has to look like it's not in reverse.

this cold play video does it well:

I don't know if they're doing this as a practical effect or if they're doing some kind of 3D mouth re-mapping.

If I can do this practically, that'd be awesome.

Thoughts?

You'd have to record the singing, and during the shoot, play it in reverse for the talent to lip-sync. It will, obviously, take a lot of practice on everyone's part before you get a good take. Especially the talent, who will have to learn how to sing in reverse.

Other fun things to plan: if there's a big finish in the song where the talent throws out the arms on the last note, such a move would also have to be choreographed. That's just an example, but you get the idea.

oh, okay good. So it is a practical effect and is as simple as playing the line or whatever in reverse. Thanks!

The CONCEPT is simple, but the EXECUTION is not!

That's particularly true for the talent who has to learn a song in reverse (lots of practice!), the choreographer who has to plan out moves in reverse, the technician who has to ensure that the song gets played back at the proper speed in reverse -- both during the talent's practices and during the shoot -- and the director who has to make darn sure to get a perfectly lip-synced take... in reverse.
